Work Permit Holders in Canada Can Take Short Courses Without a Study Permit
Source: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, 9 Sep 2026 · Checked 13 Oct 2026
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a temporary measure on 9 September 2026. People in Canada who hold a valid work permit can study for up to six months, or until their permit ends if that comes first, without applying for a study permit.
IRCC says the measure is for workers already in Canada, including nurses, tradespeople and laboratory technicians, who want short-term licensing, education or training while they keep working. It is in effect until 31 December 2027, and IRCC says it is letting eligible work permit holders know.
Two limits matter. Full-time studies still need a study permit. And IRCC says this is not a new pathway for workers to come to Canada.
Who it affects: internationally educated nurses already working in Canada on a valid work permit who need a short course for their licence. For the exact rules, read IRCC's notice and the public policy it links to.
